The Legend Behind Alicantito

Alicantito may be a new character, but the idea behind him is very old.

He was inspired by El Alicanto, a legendary bird from Chilean folklore, said to roam the Atacama Desert searching for precious metals. According to the old stories, the bird fed on gold and silver, and its feathers could glow in the darkness.

Miners would sometimes follow El Alicanto through the desert, hoping it would lead them to hidden riches. But the legend also tells us that following the bird for the wrong reasons didn't always end well.

From that old South American legend came a new idea: what might an Alicanto be like when he was young?

And that is how Alicantito was born.

Discover Andy From The Andes

Meet Alicantito

Alicantito is a magical, metal-eating bird from the Andes, with golden feathers, a taste for anything metallic and a rather unusual way of making friends.

He first meets Andy when the young boy rescues him from a dangerous heap of metal at a factory. What Andy doesn't know is that this extraordinary bird is about to change both their lives.

Alicantito was inspired by El Alicanto, the legendary bird of Chilean folklore, said to roam the Atacama Desert in search of gold and silver.

And this is only the beginning of Andy and Alicantito's adventures, sometimes pursued by Mr Snare, a very persistent zookeeper with an enormous butterfly net!
